Augustus, Lugdunum mint (Lyon), 15-10 BC., countermarked during reign of Claudius,
As (ø 24-26 mm / 8,07 g), copper, axes about coin alignment ↑↓ (ca. 160°),
Obv.: CAESAR - PONT MAX , laureate head of Augustus right.
Rev.: ROM [ET] AVG , front elevation of the Roma-Augustus-Altar of Lugdunum, decorated with the corona civica between laurels, flanked by nude male figures; to left and right, Victories on columns, facing one another; below, countermark S in a square punch; small cut on lower left of altar.
RIC I 230 var. (countermark) (type common) ; BMC 550 var. (countermark) ; CBN 1485 var. (countermark) ; Coh. 209 var. (countermark) . For countermark: Werz p. 558 and 625, countermark no. 164 (6 countermarks listed) .

The reverse of this coin features the celebrated Altar of Lugdunum which had been dedicated by Augustus on August 1st, 10 BC. The altar had been erected 12 BC. by Drusus.
Each year on the 1st of August the 60 civitates of the three Gauls met at this altar for festivities and to affirm their loyalty to the Empire.
